I think Miss Peregrine’s was very very similar to the concept of Xmen – kids with powers being bought up hidden in an orphanage in the countryside with baddies after them – I found it all a bit too similar to be original!

  1. i want to hear what you think the story is based on, i heard someone else mention it being similar to something else and i want to see if you say the same thing, you can put it in my next GD message lol

"maybe i'm just a pansy" made me laugh πŸ™‚

  2. Glad you ended up enjoying CCF and was very happy to hear your perspective on Miss Peregrine. Not too many people whose tastes I can relate to have read it. I'm still undecided as to if I want to pick it up. I'm thinking if I see it super discounted I may give it a go otherwise I might just leave it. πŸ™‚

  3. Miss Peregrine's is a bit of a YA favourite, isn't it? I agree with Mercedes for the most part – I didn't find it scary either, and I think the photos did a lot to add to it, but the story wasn't great.

I think that comparison is right, like a gothic, war-time version of that. I found the main character a bit too clueless to be likeable, and the love story almost didn't believe in itself. I didn't realise it was a series til finishing it, and probably won't carry on.

  4. I am really growing attached to you and your videos… They're very enjoyable and so informative. Also, I have seen a bunch of reviews on Miss Pregerine's and yours is the first that wasn't praisal only. I had a feeling that maybe the story wasn't as phenomenal as some people suggested and I am glad you put things in perspective. That is something you're really good at, I think, pointing out weak aspects while still being able to see the positive ones. Thanks!

  5. Aww thank you very much πŸ™‚ It is a really cool, different read. You too πŸ™‚

  6. I'll make sure to tell you in the message then! Maybe it's just me being picky but i think it's very similar!

Haha – I had to pysche myself up to go brush my teeth because I was so scared!

  7. As a reading experience I really enjoyed it. I look forward to other authors trying out the publishing style and pairing it with a better crafted novel. However I bet they'll also be a load of crap published following the trend! yeah that's probably for the best – I wouldn't say it's a must read. I think you can tell how good a book is by how much you care about the ending – I didn't care what happened so I think that speaks volumes!

  8. I don't think i'll bother to carry on either. I don't see how photos could be incorporated in the next book anyway :S It would feel way too contrived if they were!

  9. Oh thank you so much! I was worried I didn't give enough information in this video! Hahaha it's so odd hearing other people say that i'm good at reveiwing books when most of the time I dont know what i'm doing! But it would appear i'm faking it pretty well! haha.

  10. It really really is! I loved how as the story progressed the use of the space and the way the story was represented evolved. So not only was the story itself a journey but also the drawing style.

  11. I'll make sure to check them both out. I hadn't heard or Clive Barker, but Weaveworld sounds pretty good πŸ™‚

  12. Yeah they really did. Plus they were just intriguing photos in general πŸ™‚

  13. Three Shadows sounds very interesting. I adore reading graphic novels so I will definitely be looking into this one. Thanks for the reviews!

  14. Yeah I loved it πŸ˜€ What graphic novels would you recommend? I've asked for quite a few for my birthday (which is only a few weeks away). So i'm super excited to try some more!

  15. I recently watched the film version of Cold Comfort Farm – fun film if a bit fluffy. I'd been meaning to read the book and the movie + your review makes me excited to undertake the task!

  16. It's going to be your birthday! Happy (Early) Birthday! I hope you get all the books you ask for! ^_^ As for which graphic novels, it all depends on what you may like but a few that I think are worth reading are Maus by Art Spiegelman (it's a story about how the survivors of the Holocaust were affected; very interesting) and Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi (Satrapi’s memoir of her experiences during the Islamic Revolution). I don't know if either are to your liking but I thought they were amazing!

  17. So now Cold Comfort Farm is another book your review has made me buy! Not at all what I would usually read, but I'm really excited! (Working my way backwards through your older recommendations!) Can't wait for your birthday haul post :).

  18. Yay, I hope you enjoy it! It felt very different to anything i'd read before, quite gloomy but funny at the same time. I'm excited to hear what you think of them all!!
