There was no shortage of stunned faces in the audience when Nokia CEO Stephen Elop announced the 808 PureView at Mobile World Congress 17 months ago. Who would have thought a Symbian-powered device would be a show-stealer — in 2012? After all, Elop had all but declared the platform dead one year before, and the idea of a smartphone with a 41-megapixel camera was an industry first. Questions lingered immediately after: how is that actually going to work on a phone? Why Symbian? And when would it show up on Windows Phone, Nokia’s OS of choice?

As it turns out, the 808 PureView was the culmination of five years’ worth of imaging experts putting their heads together, and Nokia wanted to get the proof of concept out the door while getting the innovative tech ready for Windows Phone. A few months after the 808’s release, we started seeing the first fruits of this effort in the Lumia 920, but there was work yet to be done. Finally, the time has come for the company to launch the 808’s WP8 counterpart, the Lumia 1020, and it’s launching on AT&T this Friday for $300 as a US exclusive. We were able to peel ourselves away from taking pictures long enough to jot down a few thoughts, so shoot below the break to take a closer look.

  1. October 2013 my cell contract ends & finally I land this device! Let the amateur photographers aspire to be pro and professionals push the limits with the Lumia 1020.

  2. That is what Nokia's lock screens look like, they have been like that for years. My old 6682 showed time, date, missed call's, missed message's, voice mail's, e-mail's on the screen saver screen and that's a 2005 phone.

  3. No, we call this a review video. The full review is on engadget.com and is more than 5,000 words. This is meant to complement the text, not replace it.

  4. When my phone turns black screen, it doesn't show the time, only wh en i unlock the phone and it shows the lock screen does it tell the time.

  5. It's got to be somewhere in the settings, I dont own a lumia so I dont really know. I've only used symbian nokia's.

  6. getting better and better all the time..people forget that wp8 is VERY new platform… microsoft has alot of money on its back and expert engineers/programmers..

  7. thanks you for an answer finally!! D'you know if the Amber update will come to the 920?

  8. yea, I don't know when thought. But I know that nokia put update news on their fb or twitter a lot, not all the times, but usually I know when there is an update because they post it on their FB page, but as I say, not always, just put your update checking in the setting menu to on

  9. how can anyone be an S4 fan? Seriously? Ugliest phone ever… so many shitty features that it needs an "easy mode". HOW can anyone voluntarily choose an S4 over a HTC One, iPhone 5 or Lumia 920/1020

  10. Why critise someone's opinion? he's respecting a different platform they way it is rather than the typical platform fight

  11. S4 offers alot of stuff that no other phone does. Besides looks and likes depend on the person. I am a lumia fan but respect other phones as well. it all comes down to your personal preference.

  12. without exaggeration your comment is one of the most relevant and best points made that I have ever read on YouTube !
    .

  13. The iPhone 5s gets a buggy fingerprint scanner and no other inoovation, gets tons of hype and raving reviews. Nokia releases an amazing phone with an amazing camera and gets almost no hype and pretty good reviews.

This is what is wrong with this world.
